The old man always ordered the same thing: coffee and toast. He barely spoke, but he always smiled politely. One morning, when the waitress came to clear his table, she noticed a folded note beside the empty cup.

For a moment, she thought it was just a receipt or maybe a small tip. But when she opened the folded piece of paper, she realized it was a handwritten message.
Her hands trembled slightly as she began to read.

“Thank you for your kindness. You may not realize it, but your smile and your warm greetings were the best part of my day. I recently lost my wife, and coming here every morning helped me feel less alone.”
The waitress felt a lump in her throat. She had always thought she was simply doing her job, serving coffee and toast like she did for every other customer.
But to this quiet old man, those small moments meant something much more.
She looked around the café, hoping to see him again so she could thank him — but that morning, he never returned.
From that day on, she kept the note in her apron pocket as a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can mean the world to someone.
