One quiet afternoon in the park, an elderly man sat alone on a wooden bench.
People walked past him without noticing.
Then a small boy approached and asked if he could sit there.
The old man nodded, surprised.
For a while, they sat in silence.
Then the boy asked a simple question:
“Are you lonely?”
The conversation that followed changed both of their livesThe old man looked at the boy for a moment and gave a small smile.
“A little,” he admitted.
The boy nodded as if he understood.
“My grandma says people get lonely when they don’t have someone to talk to,” the boy said.
The old man chuckled softly.
“Your grandma sounds like a wise woman.”
They began talking about simple things — the trees in the park, the birds flying overhead, and the boy’s school.
Minutes turned into nearly an hour.
Before leaving, the boy asked, “Can I come sit with you again tomorrow?”
The old man’s eyes softened.
“I would like that very much.”
The next day, the boy returned.
And the day after that.
Soon, the lonely bench in the park became their special place.
People walking through the park started noticing the pair — the elderly man and the cheerful boy laughing together.
One afternoon, the boy brought something with him.
It was a drawing.
In the picture was a park bench, two people sitting together, and a bright sun above them.
At the top he had written:
“My friend.”
The old man held the drawing carefully.
For the first time in a very long time, he didn’t feel alone anymore.
